1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Carte de Visite

1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Carte de Visite

One of the true Holy Grails of baseball collecting. Acknowledged as one of the two original baseball cards this also happens to be of one of the greatest teams as well. This photo studio gem features a real photograph of the first professional baseball team including George & Harry Wright, Allison, McVey, Leonard, Hurley, Sweasy, Waterman, Brainard, and Gould. The photograph itself is in NRMT condition with amazing crystal clear contrast. The photo is mounted on clean white cardboard with red printing identifying the team and its players. On the verso is the piece de resistance. The original Peck & Snyder back is advertising their New York City sports emporium. Overall 4 1/8x3", about .25" of the bottom of the card has been neatly trimmed off. Otherwise the card is in strong EX+ condition. Less than a handful of specimens exist of this important cog in the history of baseball card issues. Carte de visites were sold in photographer's studios of the day picturing famous people from President Abraham Lincoln to General Tom Thumb. The fact that this has a Peck & Snyder advertising back makes this along with the 1868 Atlantics the first baseball cards.
