1880s "The First Lawn Golf Game" by R.H. Ayres
This resplendent Victorian Lawn Golf game is by F.H. Ayres circa mid-1880s. From the leading manufacturer of these type of games in Britain, this set is in its original pine box measuring 47x8x5" with original paper trade label reading, "The New Game of Lawn Golf." Complete with four exceptionally rare hickory spliced neck, full-sized long nose driver clubs measuring 38.25" at their tallest, with full length 11.75" sheepskin grips, fitted with horn soles. Additionally, this comes with two early gutter percha balls and seven metal hoops with hand-painted tin flags. In 1895, known then as F. H. Ayres, they employed a staff of 600 people at their manufacturing headquarters in Aldersgate Street, London. A steady decline followed in the early twentieth century and rocking horses became their leading business. Eventually, as a result of World War II, things came to a head and they became part of Slazenger in 1940.They began selling golf clubs in the mid-1880s and since this is their "First" it likely dates it to this period.
