1887 St. Louis Browns Stanhope
Fantastic vintage piece is this seemingly Clark Kent-ish 5/8" celluloid figural baseball. Laces and engraved "St. Louis Browns" are deftly incised. But this is in fact Superman. Known as a "Stanhope," when you look through a peephole, an image is shown from the light escaping in from the hole at the other side. The image is a spectacular photographic montage of the ten heads of the American Association's 1887 St. Louis Browns, including Comiskey, Gleason, O'Neil, Welch, Caruthers and more. They are the same images used in the Old Judge series. Wearing traditional striped pillbox caps, they have heavy mustaches and supreme talent. Image is about 80%, good for a Stanhope of this period. Baseball has a slight yellow spot and small loop to hang it on a necklace is broken off o/w EX-MT. Only specimen known, and a wonderful slice of 19th century baseball and American workmanship.
