1892 New York Giants Large Albumen Team Photo
This incredible relic is seeing the light of day for the first time in more than a century, a haunting and exquisite photographic capture of the 1892 New York Giants on Opening Day at the New York Polo Grounds. This was the third incarnation of the “Polo Grounds”, originally located at the northern edge of Central Park between 5th & 6th Avenues, from 110th to 112th streets; the park seen in the background in this large (23 ? x 19 ?”) albumen team photo was initially named Brotherhood Park, home of the short-lived Players League of 1890, but re-named the Polo Grounds (for the sake of tradition) when the Giants moved on to this northern half of Coogan's Hollow between 157th and 159th streets. Notice how the patriotic and various styles of bunting adorn both levels of the old grand stands. It is hard to believe that the Giants did not win the pennant this year with this roster full of Hall of Famers - Rusie, Ewing, Welch, and O'Rourke are all here, along with King, Murphy, Boyle, Bassett, Fields, Lyons, Fuller, Crane, Tiernan, Sharrott, Gore and Manager Powers. Retaining its original matte, this exceptional photograph is toned and has several punctures, but overall is remarkable considering its age and size. On a scale of 1 to 10, we grade it a 6. Simply amazing!
