1899-1900 William McKinley Signed Proclamations to General Patton's Father (2)
Offered are two documents, pertaining to the same topic, each signed by President William McKinley. Each document, partially filled out by hand, serves to appoint John Patton “First Lieutenant in the Thirty-seventh regiment of infantry United States Volunteers” as of July 5, 1899. The first was signed and dated January 8, 1900. McKinley’s signature which grades a “6” is still bold, faded to brown and slightly bled. Also signed by Secretary of War Elihu Root. The second serves to appoint the same, but was signed on July 11, 1899. McKinley’s signature is slightly bolder and less faded, grading a “7”. Also signed by Secretary of War, Russel Alger. Each document bears the blue U.S. War Department seal in lower left and the official stamp from the Adjutant General (with signature from H.C. Corbin). Paper is lightly to moderately toned. Documents are VG-EX.
