1912 Titanic John B. Thayer Scrimshaw Memorial Opera Glasses

1912 Titanic John B. Thayer Scrimshaw Memorial Opera Glasses

Opera glasses made of scrimshaw (carved whale ivory) and brass, inscribed "In Memory of John B. Thayer” with an intricately detailed design of the Titanic sinking at sea, surrounded by lifeboats. John B. Thayer Sr. was a prominent Philadelphian, Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and one of the heralded heroes of the Titanic disaster. His son John B. Thayer and his wife survived, his son wrote a book which was a full account of the tragedy entitled “The Sinking of the SS Titanic”. The glasses appear EX, but there are a couple of cracks in the ivory. This does not affect the design, images and inscription. The design is still bold, and the text legible, they are in working condition with no cracks or chips in the glass. This is a rare Titanic piece with great honor, and important historical significance.
