1917 World Series Gambling Letter
A mysterious and cryptic typed and unsigned missive from an unknown "friend" who wants the scoop on the 1917 World Series. Sent from New Orleans, Louisiana, dated October 8, 1917, the day after he got three hits in Game 2 and a week before the Series closer. It reads, "Dear Friend, Just a line to congratulate you for your feat that you performed in the second game of the Series. By getting three hits out of as many times at bat. This is an unknown friend that is writing to you but would like to get a line from you once in a while about what is the dope that is going on up there in Chicago. Hoping to receive an answer within a couple of days. I remain your unknown friend. Your (sic) truly." "Dope" refers to insider gambling info and this predates the throwing of the 1919 World Series. Why oh why did he save this? Document that shadows the 1919 Scandal and colors Joe's role in an entirely different light.
