1920s Reggie McNamara Handlebars - "Greatest of All Six-Day Bicycle Riders" (ex-Helms Museum & Joe E. Brown)

1920s Reggie McNamara Handlebars - "Greatest of All Six-Day Bicycle Riders" (ex-Helms Museum & Joe E. Brown)

The "Iron Man" of speed bicyclists, roughhouse velodrome rider Reggie McNamara is considered to be the greatest of all. This Australian legend had a string of dramatic crashes and broken bones, yet rode 3,000 races on three continents over a 30-year span. McNamara won more than 700 races before he retired at the remarkable age of 50 in 1937. Interestingly, this piece was identified in the Helms inventory simile as generic 1920s speed bike handlebars, whose true identity would have been lost to the ages as it was unidentified in the Helms inventory. Yet remarkably, we found a photograph in our personal photo collection. These very handlebars with their unique taping pattern are clearly shown in a photograph taken around 1940 of the pioneering sports memorabilia collection of movie star Joe E. Brown. This and other historic pieces from Brown's personal sports collection were used to promote the film "So You Won't Talk". Plainly seen in the photograph (shown here) and described on the back caption as: "Odds and Ends of Sports Fame." A PERFECT photo match (photo not included). It is a known fact that Joe E. Brown's sports memorabilia collection was later donated to Helms Museum, hence their appearance here.
