1956 Japan-American Kendo Matching Swords & Gloves (ex-Helms Museum Collection)
These kendo swords have roots in the samurai tradition. In bold marker is Japanese lettering, then "Nov. 1956 Japan American Kendo Match, Osaka Japan - Japan Toshiyuki Kubota vs. United States Gordon Warner." Dr. Warner is an authority on the Japanese art of kendo and a retired USMC Lieutenant Colonel, WWII veteran of the Pacific Campaign and recipient of the Navy Cross. Kendo was banned after World War II because of its nationalistic and militaristic associations, and was revived as a sport in the 1950s. These bamboo swords are of beautiful quality, with suede handles and measuring 47" long. The fitted leather gloves are also of superior manufacture and are in beautiful condition, measuring 14" long. Included is a handsome cotton and silk badge and ribbon presented to the winner with gold Japanese writing and "LBKC." In NRMT condition overall, from the collection of the esteemed Helms Hall Sports Museum and will come with letter of provenance/authenticity from Lelands.com.
