1921 Babe Ruth Barnstorming Tour Documents (13)
Important material relates to the Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel 1921 Barnstorming Tour that resulted in their suspensions. They openly defied Judge Landis' ban on World Series participants playing post-season exhibitions. Ruth challenged Landis to act; in turn Landis fined the players their World Series shares (over $3,000 each) and suspended them until May 20th of the following season.Eleven documents are from the personal archives of Yankees owner Colonel Huston, and have never been previously seen or offered for sale. Includes: 1) 1922 typed letter from Ruth and Meusel to Landis to "…petition you to rescind or at least commute the sentence imposed on us for playing exhibition games after the 1921 World Series ended…" Letter is an admission of guilt: "The Yankees and their teammates will be hurt by the suspension…the team has a splendid chance of winning the pennant and participating in the World Series…" Signed at the bottom in NRMT black ink by Ruth and Meusel. 2) 1922 Huston typed letter (unsigned) to Landis on Yankees' $125,000 loss due to the Ruth suspension. 3) Typed Huston letter (unsigned with handwritten notes) to Landis about trying to convince Babe to abandon the tour. 4) 1922 typed letter to Landis from Huston (unsigned) asking to cut the suspension in half. 5) 1922 four-page typed letter to Landis from Huston (unsigned) pleading with Landis to reconsider suspension. "…The whole baseball family will suffer from the absence of Ruth…" 6) 1922 Huston typed letter to Landis (unsigned) citing damages from suspension. "…Attendance has fallen off at home over one hundred and fifty thousand…" 7) 1922 Landis typed letter to Huston regarding tour participant Piercy giving a statement that Huston consented to allowing him to barnstorm after the 1921 World Series. Signed by Landis in NRMT black ink. 8) 1922 typed letter to Landis from Huston (unsigned) denying that he gave permission. 9-11) Three unsigned copies of letters regarding $10,000 in fines against Ruth.Condition: Most of the letters are flawed by rust marks from paper clips, but all writing is still readable and otherwise EX.
