1922 Joe Jackson Negro Baseball Broadside

1922 Joe Jackson Negro Baseball Broadside

The only known piece connecting Shoeless Joe Jackson to Negro League baseball, this item explores the connection of African Americans and Black Sox, both essentially "banned." The Westwood Baseball Club takes on the socially inferior Virginia Colored Giants at the Westwood Oval. This 6" x 9" period paper poster trumpets that "JOE JACKSON and other Stars will positively appear in Westwood's lineup." These "Stars" may refer to his Black Sox brethren. Overall wear with excess paper "on top" in areas should be able to be archivally removed. Ironic separate news article on the page beside it telling the tale of Jackson great in defeat in the 1919 World Series yet causing this amazing athlete having to stoop to semi-pro. Here, the two oppressed parties meet in the Deep South, in deepest irony.
