1934 Tour of Japan Team Signed Diary
The wife of 11-year veteran infielder Harold "Rabbit" Warstler kept a detailed diary from before, during and after an American baseball tour of Japan. It is a 1935 diary but she began making entries in 1934, including a September 9 entry proclaiming the upcoming trip. Some fantastic reading gives insight into the personal lives of the like of Babe Ruth, Moe Berg, Jimmie Foxx and Lou Gehrig. A wonderful account of the entire tour, which began in Europe and included many Asian nations. In the middle of the book, we find the signatures of 39 notables from the tour. Note pages list all the American players and most of the wives. Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, Morris Berg (signed in English and Japanese), Sotaro Suzuki, Lefty O'Doul (English and Japanese), Earl Whitehill, Doc Ebling, Lefty Gomez, Lou Gehrig, Mrs. Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Julia Ruth, Clint Brown, Charlie Gehringer, Earl Averill and more. The ink signatures average 7.5/10. Two pages have slight water spots affecting the Moe Berg signature. Overall the diary is in VG condition. Everything from meals to activities are included here. Tons of info to peruse, especially with the knowledge that most of these events took place only seven years before Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, bringing the U.S. into World War II.
