1939-40 Sugar Ray Robinson Golden Gloves Sweater

1939-40 Sugar Ray Robinson Golden Gloves Sweater

Worn by Sugar Ray Robinson as an amateur in the Gold Gloves, just before he would begin his Hall of Fame boxing career. The navy wool sweater is adorned with yellow felt “NY” logo on left breast and “Golden Gloves” on the verso. Front is zip-up with stylish oversized collar. Sleeves are also zip-up, allowing for ventilation. The sweater boasts several small moth holes and shows good use and wear. Sugar Ray wore this while he fought as an amateur, during which time he acquired his nickname. Robinson won the Golden Gloves as a featherweight in 1939, and again as a lightweight in 1940, competing in a total of 85 amateur fights, winning 69 by KO. Obtained from the Robinson family and accompanied by an LOA from Sugar Ray Robinson's son.
