Sugar Ray Robinson Fight Gloves Worn for Chicago Fullmer Fight

Sugar Ray Robinson Fight Gloves Worn for Chicago Fullmer Fight

These are the red “Ray Flores” fight gloves worn by Sugar Ray Robinson on May 1, 1957 to KO Chicago Fullmer in the 5th round. The importance of such one-of-a-kind pieces of boxing lore from one of the most famous and publicized championship fights in history goes without saying, but one of such pedigree is worthy of special note. Obtained from “Sugar” Ray’s son, Ray Robinson II, they are inscribed on the inside lining of each in Ray Robinson’s own hand, “To R.R. II.” Additionally, the right glove is annotated also on the inside lining, “R 6 R” to signify Ray Robinson - 6 ounce, the number “1” encircled indicating this is the 1 glove, and “Chicago Fullmer 1957 May 1st KO 5th rd.” Inside of left hand glove with similar blueink inscription written, “R 6 R, [the number] 2 [encircled], Chicago Fullmer May 1 KO 5th rd.” Original laces attached to left glove and each carries the manufacturer’s tag, “Ray Flores, San Francisco, California” on top. LOA from Ray Robinson II.
