Shown in this vintage first generation photo is the welcoming party for Josh Gibson, a.k.a. the Black Babe Ruth, as well as Billy Bird & Dick Seay. These three were signed in 1939 to bolster the Santurce Crabbers ball club with Josh Gibson (at center) as Manager. It was the team’s first year in the Winter League. Also shown is owner, Pedrin Zorilla, Hiram Bithorn, & Pookie Muniz (batboy) along with close family members. One of the few living participants in this photo, the batboy, has signed in black fountain pen, “Pookie Muniz, 5/1/95.” Severe creasing and some paper loss on edges. O/w VG.
