1971 Roberto Clemente San Juan Senadores Game Worn Jersey with Photo Documentation
In the history of Roberto Clemente collecting, there has been none more distinguished than this San Juan Senadores jersey, worn by the Great One during the 1971 Winter League in San Juan. Straight from his native Puerto Rico, this white pinstripe jersey, bearing the blue diamond team patch with “SJ” embroidered in white over the heart is the most extraordinary piece of the legacy ever to surface. Bearing his legendary “21” on the verso in navy tackle twill, along with the arched name of their sponsor, “Bacardi” above, it is presented as a predominant piece of baseball lore. Best of all, it displays the unmistakable evidence of use during competition in the form of staining and wear attributed to game use. One can only imagine the feats accomplished while he was wearing this jersey in his native land, just one year before his untimely death. To further strengthen its authenticity, it comes with a photo of Clemente accepting his Gold Glove award (from 1961) from Governor Louis Ferrie, while wearing this very jersey! As you will see, the pinstripes, which are like the jersey's fingerprints, match up exactly with the jersey in the photo. Photo is also signed by Ferrie. Collar tagging is a faded “Wilson [size] 42”.
