1943 The Sporting News Team Photograph Compete Set of 16
The faces of major league baseball in 1943 -- all white and mostly unrecognizeable while the DiMaggios, Williamses, Greenbergs and Fellers wore military instead of gray flannel uniforms -- are displayed in this complete set of Sporting News 8 x 10 team photos by photographer George Dorrill. Though many are strangers even to the trained eye, there are the familiar faces of Stan Musial, Leo Durocher, Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, Bill Dickey, Joe MaCarthy, Joe Cronin -- and the inimitable guises of two very familiar men in crisp dress suits: Connie Mack (as usual) and Boston Braves manager Casey Stengel (inexplicably gangster-looking in a suit and dark shirt and fedora -- perhaps looking to make a quick getaway, as the team finished 6th). Photos are NRMT with a slight tinge of antique-looking sepia toning.
