1955 Heisman Perpetual Trophy - One of Only Two Known (ex-Helms Museum)

1955 Heisman Perpetual Trophy - One of Only Two Known (ex-Helms Museum)

This is one of the two most important Heisman Trophies extant. This is NOT a mere annual trophy presented to the winner and his school, it's far more important. This is the PERPETUAL Heisman Trophy and one of only two we know to exist. It is far larger and heavier than the "annual" replicas presented to both the winner and his school. The only other version we know of is a virtually identical perpetual Heisman famously on display for decades at the Downtown Athletic Club in Lower Manhattan. This was created specifically for display at the esteemed Los Angeles sports institution, the Helms Athletic Foundation Museum. The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award is one of the most important and valuable awards in sports. Presented annually to the most outstanding college football player in the nation, it is unmatched by any individual player sports awards. There is nothing else like it not only in terms of its historic importance but also the very look of the award itself. Crafted in masterful solid bronze, it is easily the most attractive award in sports and it has not changed since it was designed by sculptor Frank Eliscu and first presented in this form in 1936. We are honored to have sold that one for Larry Kelley in 1999 for $328,110. The masterfully engraved front plate reads: "The Heisman Memorial Trophy Awarded Annually to the Outstanding College Football Player in the United States by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City, Inc." Beneath that lists the first 20 winners starting with John Jay Berwanger in 1935, Larry Kelley in 1936, and ending with Alan Ameche in 1954. A legend relating to Helms has been expertly and undetectably covered which can easily be reversed. The classic bronze statue by Eliscu rests on a stunning marble base and stands 18" overall. It weighs an incredible 93 pounds! Heismans have always brought six-figures and generally sell for over a quarter of a million dollars. We are honored to have sold three of them in our tenure and despite their incredible value only a handful have ever come on the market. We firmly believe this one is superior to any that have ever been sold. It is larger and far heavier than the annual Heismans and is simply MUCH more impressive. Having handled and held other Heismans in the past, we simply know the differences, which are instantly apparent. Bottom line, this one blows away the others. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own one of the great sports pieces in the world. And only those that fully understand what this is and its one-of-a-kind importance need apply.
