1956 Mickey Mantle Illustration Art
Original art for Sports Illustrated, depicting Mickey Mantle in mid-swing at Yankee Stadium is both symbolic and definitive of that historic 1956 season. Mixed media illustration from 1957, on 13x 18" board, is signed by Bernard D'Andrea, a well-known illustrator and listed artist of the period. What is interesting is the perspective, which is field level but from the back, and the artist's uncanny ability to portray motion. The notations and instructions for print is what you would expect with original illustration art, "Be sure home team means white, visiting team gray" on the right border and "Most Valuable Player -- Tom McMorrow" and "Pg. 15" on the lower border. Actual 12 x 14" image is EX+ and can easily be framed without the extraneous notations. Otherwise, EX. This original artwork of Mickey Mantle swinging for the Yankee Stadium fences was done for Sports Illustrated after Mantle's monster year of 1956. Watercolor and pastel Ink and pen color drawing, done from a field level angle behind the plate peeking between Mickey and the catcher, is on a 13 x 18" piece of cardboard
