1957 Cassius Clay Golden Gloves Trophy (12.5" tall)
The professional accomplishments of Cassius Clay / Muhammad Ali are well documented in boxing history. Ali was a three time World Heavyweight Champion who dominated the division for nearly two decades posting victories over ring greats Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, George Foreman, Joe Frazier & Ken Norton. Almost forgotten are his great accomplishments as an amateur boxer fighting out of the Columbia Gym in Louisville, Kentucky under the watchful eye of his trainer, Joe Martin. Cassius Clay began his amateur career in 1954. Devoting most of his time and a great deal of his energy to the sport, he fought 108 amateur bouts by 1960. He was the winner of 6 Kentucky Golden Gloves championships, 2 National Gold Gloves tournaments & 2 National AAU titles by the time he was 18 years old. He went on to win the gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics in the Light Heavyweight division. Awards and trophies won by this great champion are extremely difficult to find and are seldom offered at public sale. Lelands is proud to offer the 1957 Golden Gloves trophy won by Cassius Clay at the tender age of 15. Clay, winner of the tournament for the Kentucky Golden Gloves was named the tournament's most outstanding fighter. This trophy commemorates that accomplishment. Stands on wooden base with a metallic boxer on top in full fight pose. The plaque, which is flanked by eagle and leaves on either side reads, "Golden Gloves Jr. Outstanding Fighter '57." Trophy is in fine condition with one small indentation on the base being the only discernible flaw. On the bottom in faded, but readable gold marker is written the name, Cassius Clay. Cassius Clay originally gave this trophy to the Columbia Gym in Louisville where he trained. When the gym closed in the 1960's the trophy was given along with other memorabilia to faithful employees. Comes with a detailed LOA from long-time Muhammad Ali collector who acquired this piece in Louisville as well as an additional LOA from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. who researched the item expressly for Lelands auction.
