1960 Cassius Clay AAU Most Outstanding Boxer Trophy

1960 Cassius Clay AAU Most Outstanding Boxer Trophy

After a mediocre first round against Jeff Davis, a 20-year-old water meter reader from Mobile, Alabama, Clay rallied to stop him in the second round to win the AAU title. Cassius Clay was voted the outstanding boxer in the competition which attracted 119 contestants. This was Cassius Clay’s last amateur championship before the 1960 Olympic Trials and Olympic Games. Presented here is the trophy awarded to Cassius Clay for being voted the most outstanding fighter in the National A.A.U. competition of 1960. The trophy features a boxer on a loving cup secured to a white bakelite base. On the base there is a plaque which reads, “THE A.A.U. NATIONAL AMATEUR BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS MOST OUTSTANDING BOXER AWARD TOLEDO, OHIO APRIL 7-9 1960.” The trophy is 18” in height. Some slight discoloration from age, otherwise in Excellent condition. Cassius Clay gave this outstanding award to Joe Martin, his amateur trainer and the man responsible for his turning to boxing. LOA from long time Ali collector Pete Morkovin, who originally purchased the trophy and Clay’s gloves from this event. We also have a copy of the April 10, 1960 news article from the Louisville Courier which notes the victory and that Clay was named outstanding boxer of the tournament. Additional LOA from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. Very few awards of this magnitude exist of this great fighter and fewer with such ironclad provenance.
