1960 Cassius Clay Fight Worn Gloves - The Earliest Known

On April 9, 1960, Cassius Clay at the age of eighteen successfully defended his National A.A.U. title deftly beating Jeff Davis in the second round. The trophy won by Cassius Clay and the gloves he wore in the finals were presented to his trainer Joe Martin and displayed at his Columbia Street Gym in Louisville, Kentucky before the gym closed in the mid 1960’s. Offered here are the gloves used by Cassius Clay in the 1960 National A.A.U. finals. The gloves are burgundy leather with white manufacturer’s label at each wrist for RAWLINGS. “Golden Gloves” is also present on the label. These are 10-ounce gloves as is indicated on AAU label inside the right glove. Each glove is stamped inside by the commission, “NAT’L A.A.U. TOLEDO 1960 APPROVED.” The gloves are initialed by the inspectors. The gloves show moderate wear and include the original laces. LOA from long time Ali collector Peter Morkovin who originally purchased the gloves. Additional LOA from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. Newspaper article from the Louisville Courier gives the results of the fight. These represent the earliest, documented fight worn gloves of Cassius Clay to come to auction. A perfect companion to the trophy also being offered in this sale.
