1968 Velvet Underground Poster by J. Van Hamersveld - Only Known Colored Version
John Van Hamersveld is a renowned graphic artist and illustrator who designed record jackets in the 1960s for many psychedelic and pop bands of the time. His most famous works can be seen on the covers of monumental bands such as: The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Kiss, The Rolling Stone, and many more. Van Hamersveld would also go on to design movie posters and even billboards for many top tier companies. Featured here is hand-colored lobby card poster adverting an event between the psychedelically funky May Chambers Brothers, American rock sensation Velvet Underground and Dr. John the Night Tripper. The concert took place at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, California, May 1968, as part of the Pinnacle Dance Concert Series. Boasting segmented Mickey Mouse graphics and onomatopoeia's, this cardboard lobby card is reminiscent of a mix between an old movie poster and a comic book. Recently came off the dusty wall of a California collector. Only known version that is hand-colored and this gorgeous. This is likely a prototype and therefore is 10 times more interesting than the mundane monochrome version. Pinholes and other wear, but retains its character. 14x11".
