1977 Muhammad Ali Fight Worn Shoes from Shavers Fight
On September 29, 1977 World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali defended his title against the man he dubbed, "The Acorn," Earnie Shavers. This was an extremely dangerous fight for the aging Ali, given the explosive power potential of Shavers. Often accused of being a "dog" in fights Earnie came to this one with the singular purpose, winning at all costs. As late as the 15th the two were both throwing punches toe to toe. After the final bell had rung after the 15th round, Ali had prevailed but had paid a dear price to do so. Presented here are the fight shoes worn by Muhammad Ali that evening at Madison Square Garden. The shoes are white, size thirteen and have the original laces. The name "ALI " is written in each shoe in marker. On the outer ankle of each shoe is the name of the manufacturer "MITRE" printed in red lettering. The shoes exhibit heavy wear. These shoes were part of the collection of former Ali assistant trainer and cornerman, Wali Muhammad. Wali Muhammad has provided a letter of authenticity for the shoes. There is also a letter of authenticity from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. who researched the shoes for us to present in this sale. Comes with a photo from the fight showing Ali wearing these shoes.
