1978 Muhammad Ali vs. Leon Spinks Fight Robe

1978 Muhammad Ali vs. Leon Spinks Fight Robe

Robe was originally designed to be worn by The Greatest in his legendary fight with Leon Spinks. Ali changed his mind and instead used it afterwards for training (it is also possible he used it for other fights as well). Calf length, white satin robe sports attractive green and yellow trim. On the verso in sewn-on green lettering are the stirring words, “Muhammad Ali”. The front is signed in black sharpie by Muhammad Ali on the left waist pocket. This desirable “large” autograph was obtained in the 1980s. This piece was originally part of the Drew “Bundini” Brown Estate sale. It was thoroughly researched by, and will come with a letter from boxing expert Craig Hamilton. The matching sash is missing; o/w the robe is in excellent condition and shows Ali-related athletic wear. On February 15, 1978, World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali defended his title against Leon Spinks at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada. Spinks, a gold medallist as a light heavyweight in the 1976 Olympics, was given little chance by experts in this fight as he was making only his eighth appearance as a professional. Ali took him lightly and was not in top shape for the fight. It cost him dearly. Spinks, showing no intimidation, worked throughout the fight and was rewarded with a 15 round decision and the Heavyweight Title for his efforts.
