Muhammad Ali Trunks Made for 1978 Ali-Spinks
The trunks originally made to be used by Muhammad Ali in the February 15, 1978 World Heavyweight fight against Leon Spinks at the Las Vegas Hilton. Ali decided to go with his usual black and white trunks instead. However, these trunks were used by Ali after the fight for training, if not more. White satin with green and yellow trim, at the center waistband is the “Everlast” tag with all-important below legend, “Made Expressly for Muhammad Ali.” The trunks were signed in the large 1980s signature on the left leg by Muhammad Ali in black sharpie. This piece was originally part of the Drew “Bundini” Brown Estate sale, and has the original “RK 8810” tag. This lot was researched and authenticated by boxing expert Craig Hamilton and will come with his LOA. Spinks, a gold medallist as a light heavyweight in the 1976 Olympics, was given little chance by experts in this fight as he was making only his eighth appearance as a professional. Ali took him lightly and was not in top shape for the fight. It cost him dearly. Spinks, showing no intimidation, worked throughout the fight and was rewarded with a 15 round decision and the Heavyweight Title for his efforts. Condition: Excellent with some light yellowing of the white satin and fading of the colors. There are no visible rips or tears in the fabric, but there is some visible wear from boxing related use.
