1979-80 Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers 10-Year Rookie Contract
From the beginning of his career Wayne Gretzky was a phenomenal hockey player. Even as a youngster, people were predicting that he would be the greatest hockey player ever. It seems that Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington was in that camp because he courted the young Gretzky with this unprecedented ten year contract. A wise decision considering the level of play that would follow in the following years. Signed on Gretzky’s 18th birthday, January 26, 1979, the contract details his obligations as a professional hockey player. Gretzky and General Manager L.D. Gordon initialed the document fifteen times and signed at the end alongside two witness signatures. Following the contract is a three page addendum detailing Gretzky’s salary and compensation schedule, also signed by Gretzky and Gordon as well as the two witnesses. The third attached piece is a photocopied memorandum further hashing out the details of Gretzky’s contract. Included with the contract is a letter from Gordon on Oilers letterhead to Ron Ryan at the World Hockey Association asking him to approve the contract and return two of the three copies (one of which is in this lot). The documents come in the original file with a typed label reading “GRETZKY, WAYNE”. This is the contract that redefined hockey!
