1981 Muhammad Ali Worn Training Trunks for Berbick Fight
On December 11, 1981 Muhammad Ali fought his last fight as a professional against Trevor Berbick in the Bahamas. Ali, a mere shadow of the boxer he once was, lost the 10-round decision to the up-and-coming Berbick. It was a sad ending to a great career. Being the last fight of his storied career and because it took place on foreign soil, souvenirs and mementos from this event are quite scarce. Presented here are trunks which were originally intended to be worn by Muhammad Ali in this, his last fight. Ali opted for a different pair and these were used in training for the fight. The trunks are an actual match to the robe worn by Ali into the ring. Beautiful white satin with black, green, & gold trim made by Everlast. The trunks have been marked "Ali" inside in black marker. The trunks do exhibit wear, but are perfectly intact. The trunks came from the collection of Ali's assistant trainer and long-time cornerman, Wali Muhammad, who has provided his personal LOA. Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. who researched the item expressly for Lelands auction has also provided an LOA.
