1983 George Brett Pine Tar Game Full Ticket Collection (4)
It was one of the most controversial plays in baseball history, and will forever rank among the most dramatic player-umpire confrontations. On July 24, 1983 at Yankee Stadium, George Brett had hit a dramatic, two-out, two-run home run to give his Kansas City Royals a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning. However, Yankees manager Billy Martin - one of the greatest baseball minds of all-time - was aware of an obscure rule that disallowed hits if the bat used displayed pine tar above the label. When Martin called this to the attention of umpire Tim McClelland, he inspected the bat, Brett was called out and the runs nullified, setting off a firestorm of controversy and sending Brett into a rage-fueled tirade. The Yankees won the game under protest, but the Royals eventually won both the protest and the game (whose final outs were replayed a month later). From that unforgettable ballgame come these four consecutive, full tickets, whose conditions are: VG, EX, EX-MT and EX-MT. These come straight from the original purchaser who could not attend that Saturday afternoon, and they are very rare.
