19th Century Cuban Baseball Fan
Ivory and silk handpainted fans were the rage with woman of the privledged class in the later part of the 19th century. Cuban woman during the Victorian era, desperately sought the same trappings of wealth and society. Baseball was a new cultural phenomenom of the period so someone combined the two, documenting the introduction of the Sport into all facets of the Cuban life style. Beautful ivory with intricate detail, painting on silk of two crossed bats and "San Juan B.B.C. (Base Ball Club). Measures 13" long and 22" when opened. Condition is VG. Has some tearing and silk loss.
