19th Century Tintype with Black Catcher (3x4”)
This marvelous tintype is a fascinating look at the early game of baseball. This 19th century team (9 players shown) sport the uniforms of the era - note no gloves and their jersey styles. A few of the players are holding bats. Most interesting is the catcher in full gear. A rare incorporation of a black player, as we know that the color line in professional baseball was not officially broken until 1947, and that the general attitude in baseball was complete segregation up to that point. The tintype is intact except for its missing hinges on the case. Carries the cartouche, “From Schoonmakers 282 River St. - Troy, NY” branded into the velvet material under the lid. Contrast and condition is superb as this has never been taken out of its original encasings. EX-MT.
