Ali-Foreman Zaire Collection
Battle-ready silhouettes of Muhammad Ali and George Foreman grace this epic poster of their "Rumble in the Jungle" championship bout. It is the unanimous winner in a lot that includes a pennant and photo of heavyweight champions. "Glad Your (sic) Here," the top of the 24- by 30-inch poster reads. The words addressed both the audience and the fighters, who postponed their bout when Foreman sustained a gash in his eye during a sparring session. Yellowing on the top border and a middle crease are among poster's few battle scars. The combatants' autographs in black marker lend a personalized touch to a landmark event. A pre-dawn audience in Kinshasa, Zaire, was treated to Ali playing possum for seven rounds before knocking out an exhausted Foreman in the eighth to regain the title he had stripped from him seven years earlier. Red felt pennant (EX) trumpets the crowd's sympathies: Foreman, "World Heavyweight Champ," vs. Ali, "The People's Champ." Earlier 8- by 10inch wire photo (EX) of the still-champ Foreman and former champs Joe Frazier, Jack Dempsey and Jersey Joe Walcott makes a solid bookend for what was to come.
