Brother Jasper 1886 Manhattan College Photograph - Invented The Seventh Inning Stretch
This is actually a historic Manhattan College piece and one just like it is dated and appears with much more information online at https://manhattan.edu/athletics_mc/whats-jasper. This handsome photo has at its center memorable figures including, Brother Jasper of Mary, FSC, who served at the College in the late 19th century. Brother Jasper brought the then little-known sport of baseball to Manhattan College and became the team's first coach. During one particularly hot day, he noticed the students were becoming restless during the seventh inning of a close game. To relieve the tension, Br. Jasper called time-out and told the students to stand up and stretch for a few minutes until the game resumed. Since Manhattan College annually played the New York Giants baseball team in the late 1880s and into the 1890s at the Polo Grounds, the Manhattan College practice of the “seventh inning stretch” spread into the Major Leagues, and is now a tradition and part of the game. The team won against the Collegiates on this fateful day, and made Brother Jasper proud. Frame is missing small pieces, and the photo has minor foxing in the white area, otherwise nice condition overall, measuring 17.75x20.5".
