Cassius Clay Signed and Used Sparring Glove
Long before Cassius Clay threw his 1960 Olympic boxing gold medal into the Ohio River and turning his back on his "slave" roots, the young and gracious fighter took enormous pride in accepting plaudits for that signal victory in Rome (in the light heavyweight division, it is sometimes forgotten). After getting back home to Louisville, he hastened to write on this maroon boxing glove -- one of the very gloves he used during his training for the Olympics at Joe Martin's Columbia Street Gym -- "From Cassius Clay, World Olympic Boxing Champion" in blue pen. He then presented it to Martin, his mentor, who displayed it for many years in the gym. Inscription is on the fist of the plum-colored and stunning leather glove, and though the writing is a bit hard to see due to the still-dark leather, it is nonetheless a massively important and strikingly good early Clay marker, rating at least 8/10, and seemingly resistant to time as an immutable symbol of the rising storm he would unleash with gloves just like this one. Glove has white leather accents and laces and a white interior on which the telltale initials "C.C." are handwritten in black marker. Thumb is stamped with "Lined Reinforced Thumb." Leather is doughy soft and nearly pristine with no rips or holes and no damage beyond mild and barely visible soiling, and is EX-MT. Though Clay/Ali went through many transformations, the essence of this magnificent glove is that he went where he did on the skills he learned before he was The Greatest.
