Cassius Clay Training Bag Gloves Used as an Amateur For the Golden Gloves Tournament

Cassius Clay Training Bag Gloves Used as an Amateur For the Golden Gloves Tournament

Offered here are a pair of training bag gloves used by Cassius Clay in preparation for his fights for the Golden Gloves during the late 1950’s. The gloves are brown leather and are used on the speed bag, a bag designed to cultivate the speed and timing of the young Cassius Clay. On each wrist there is a cloth manufacturer’s label which reads, “POST GOLDEN GLOVES NEW YORK”. The label on the left wrist has a tear and the label on the right hand has a small hole. On the inside backhand of each glove is written in ink the initials “C.C”. (for Cassius Clay). These training gloves were once part of the Columbia Street Gym Collection in Louisville, Kentucky. This gym was run by Joe Martin, the policeman who discovered Cassius Clay and introduced him to boxing after Clay had his bicycle stolen as a youth. When the gym closed in the 1960’s these gloves were given to an associate of the gym by Joe Martin. These were sold to long time Ali collector Pete Morkovin. These gloves come with an LOA from Pete Morkovin as well as one from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. They represent one of the earliest pair of training gloves used by Cassius Clay and one of the few which could be attributed to his career in the Golden Gloves.
