Cassius Clay Vs. Sonny Liston Signed Neil Leifer Original Photo (87/350 w/LOA)

Cassius Clay Vs. Sonny Liston Signed Neil Leifer Original Photo (87/350 w/LOA)

Neil Leifer's photographs appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated over 200 times, yet the one that overshadows all else is this indelible shot of Cassius Clay standing above Sonny Liston, yelling and gesturing with his right arm for Liston to get up and fight. One of the most famous pieces of sports photograpy ever, it perfectly summons the surreal ending of the Clay-Liston rematch on May 25, 1965 in Lewiston, Maine, when Clay caught Liston with a punch few saw and which one sportswriter wrote "couldn't crush a grape." To see the once-invincible Sonny on his back, gloves submissively on the canvas, recalls the rumors before and since then that Liston was so terrified by the Black Muslims in Ali's camp that he took a dive, fearing he wouldn't get out of the building alive otherwise. Priceless, too, are the shocked looks on the faces of those at ringside. This was a special limited edition of the photo, which is blown up to 19 x 22" and numbered 87/350 on the lower left border. Photo, which looks almost larger than life up close, is NRMT at the least and graced by the NRMT signatures by Ali in blue marker at the center bottom and Leifer on the lower right. Displayed beautifully against a white matted background and preserved under glass in a 27 x 29" black frame.
