Christy Walsh Drawings & Photographs Collection (11)
This stunning collection of newspaper original art and vintage photographs was donated to the Helms Museum by Babe Ruth's agent, Christy Walsh. ARTWORK: 1) Christy Walsh was sports director of the 1939 NY World’s Fair. 3-dimensional image of Christy cut-out against a backdrop of the trylon & perisphere logo with thrilling added sports images of the goings on of the Fair. Pen & ink by legendary sports cartoonist Burris Jenkins of the NY Journal-American (18x22"). Inscribed, "All the best to Christy and this is no ghost writing...Burris Jenkins Dec. 16, 1937." Refers to him being a famous ghostwriter for Babe Ruth among others. Has some water damage and a few tears. 2) 1937 All American Board of Football 19x23" pen & ink signed, "To Christy Walsh with Best Regards, Paul Keller." Pictures the great players of that year with King, Matisi, Zarnas, Wojiechowicz, Monsky, Schwartz, Goldberg, Davis, Chapman, Beinor and Frank. Some tears and chipping. 3) Gorgeous matted portrait in charcoal of legendary football coach Pop Warner (17x21"). Inscribed "To Christy Walsh 8-10-32 (signed) Richard Stephens." 4) Pen & ink newspaper cartoon of basketball player Bill Sharman, unsigned but a commercial drawing from a newspaper measures 9.5x14" and EX. PHOTOS (all are Type I, some with Christy Walsh property stamps on versos, primarily 11x14"): 5-12) Gorgeous 1920s portrait of Christy by Apeda, the 1939 Academy of Sport at the 1939 New York World's Fair Pavilion, 1930s with Willkie for President poster, newspaper sports photo, 1940 Diamond Gloves boxing championship and 1955 golfing "Breakfast at Walshateau" journalist meeting (3) and others.
