Circa 1866 Notre Dame Baseball Championship Team Carte-de-Visite

Circa 1866 Notre Dame Baseball Championship Team Carte-de-Visite

Spectacular CDV is one of the finest collegiate baseball images extant. This shows the Fighting Irish team circa 1866 in their youthful but serious splendor. Most of the players are holding mighty bats (huge lumber) and one even has a baseball. Image is roughly cut (all original) with a tiny bit of the mount’s (only) corner missing. On unmarked mount, the verso is notated and signed by the secretary of the club. In marvelous calligraphic writing (ink) it reads, “Notre Dame Base Ball Club Champion last year.” Below it is signed “E.L.C. Sec. P.P.” Faces are firm and stark. Best of all is a priest sitting at center making sure they behave.
