"Citation" 1948 Belmont Stakes Winning Triple Crown Horseshoe

"Citation" 1948 Belmont Stakes Winning Triple Crown Horseshoe

In the long and illustrious history of the Sport of Kings, only 12 horses have won thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, with American Pharoah breaking a long drought in 2015. Both vintage and context make this an exceptional offering, as this horseshoe was worn by the 8th such champion, Citation, in his Belmont Stakes win in 1948.The shoe is fastened atop a sterling silver plate fashioned into the shape of a hoof, with engraving reading, "Worn by Citation, Bull Lea - Hydroplane II, Belmont Stakes, Triple Crown, June 12, 1948." Measuring 5x5", the underside is stamped as sterling. For context, not only was Citation the 8th American Triple Crown winner, he was also one of just three North American thoroughbreds (along with Zenyatta and Cigar) to win at least 16 consecutive races in major stakes race competition. Both as a two- and three-year old, he was the US Champion, and was the first horse to earn $1 million in winnings, finishing in the money in 43 of his 45 career races, with 32 wins; many of those were with legendary jockey Eddie Arcaro on board.Finding an artifact of this caliber and age is exceedingly difficult as so few even exist, let alone come up for auction. The connection to history makes this a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
