Exceptional Joe Jackson In Comiskey Park Photograph
This photo, which adorned the inner front cover of the scrapbook, is unlike any other we have ever seen. In fact, this is the only specimen known to exist! This lot features Jackson, sitting on a chair in the outfield of Comiskey Park, wearing his pinstriped White Sox home uniform. The advertisements on the outfield wall behind Shoeless Joe are clearly legible in this photo, and several distinguished-looking men with their hands thrust into their pockets are visible in the background, as well. A worn, wooden folding chair with an overcoat thrown on top sits to Jackson's left, making the photo feel like a true snapshot into baseball in the early 1900s. Taken from an unusual horizontal perspective, appx 8x10" and contains some creasing and defects, but is sharp overall and has been well preserved. One can clearly discern Jackson's facial features in the photo, as he appears to be in the midst of chewing tobacco and has both eyes focused on something behind the photographer, to Jackson's right. A box score and brief game story from the White Sox vs. Yankees game on August 23, 1915 has been taped to the scrapbook's cover to the right of the photo. The game described in the newspaper clipping, one of Jackson's very first contests as a member of the White Sox, ended with a walk-off triple by Shoeless Joe in the 11th inning.
