Extremely Rare 1940s Babe Ruth Radio
A bronze bust of the legendary Bambino sits atop this classic, substantial, circa-1948 radio. Much rarer than its clock counterpart, also designed by Abbotwares, this exquisite, 10"-tall piece of Americana features a volume control on the left side of the base and tuner knob on the right. Flanking the Babe's likeness on the top are bronze baseballs commemorating two of his most famous achievements on the diamond: his one-time "ONE SEASON 60 HOME RUNS" record and his "LIFETIME 714 HOME RUNS" mark that lasted for decades as the standard for sluggers. Radios such as this were likely crafted as prizes from a baseball punch board game, although they were likely sold to the public thereafter. The radio does not appear to be in working order, although upon light examination, some chatter was audible on the lower frequencies. The original wiring remains intact. The balls are slightly loose and there is some light wear visible on the top of the art-deco base, but otherwise is in EX condition, standing appx. 10" tall.
