Humphrey Bogart & Peter Lorre Signed Photographs With Four Movie Photos from Beat the Devil
Standouts in this lot are 2 small publicity photos (3 ? x 5 ?”) of Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre, both signed by the actors, and each inscribed to a mysterious “Elias”. Bogart’s autograph is in blue, lost only slightly in the shadows of his jacket and rating a solid 9/10, and Lorre’s is bit light, an 8/10, but black against light gray, the autograph is very clear. All black and white glory from these 6 photographs, associated with the 1953 campy classic “Beat the Devil”, starring Humphrey Bogart, and directed by John Huston. Really, only three 8x10 movie stills are directly involved with the movie: two with Bogart and Jennifer Jones, and one with Robert Morley, Peter Lorre, and Marco Tulli. A nice touch, on 2 of these 3, is the typewritten caption taped to the back, with a line of dialogue and brief description of the scene. The one 8x10 of John Huston directing a scene, with his cameraman and a crew member, has a beautiful, full range of tones and is shot from a dramatic angle, but, according to the typed publicity note stuck on the back with ancient scotch tape, it is not "Beat the Devil", rather his 1952 “Moulin Rouge.” Though all with pin holes, and some tears and creases, an Excellent group of photos.
