Important Letter to Curt Flood
Three years before he became the face of the free agency movement by refusing to accept a trade following the 1969 season, ultimately appealing his case to the U.S. Supreme Court, Cardinals outfielder Curt Flood received this letter from then-manager Red Schoendienst. The typed, two-page letter, which is dated Feb. 14, 1966, is signed by Red and written to encourage him to sign his contract. Although Flood's 1969 legal challenge was unsuccessful, it brought about additional solidarity among players as they fought against baseball's reserve clause and sought free agency. This letter offers a little foreshadowing. The signature rates 8.5/10 while the letter has a fold but is otherwise EX.
