January 1970 Alvin Karpas TLS
In this January 1970 two-page letter, written by former "Public Enemy Number One" Alvin Karpas after he'd been sprung from prison after 33 years, Karpas vividly recalls his 1936 capture by J. Edgar Hoover, including the order "Put the cuffs on Karpas." Karpas enjoyed writing about his life in crime but wasn't around to see his memoirs published in 1980, having committed suicide a year earlier. Karpas' signature in blue-black ink is a good 9 and the letter EX-NRMT with very light damage. Three binder holes at left.
