Leroy Neiman 1989 Serigraph "Super Play"
LeRoy Neiman employs masterful coloring and breadth of space to visually tell the story of the “Super Play” from the 23rd Super Bowl as the San Francisco 49ers drove 92 yards with minutes on the clock to win the championship over the Cincinnati Bengals by a mere four points. Notice the direction of action from right to left: the lost-in-the-background Joe Montana, the nearly invisible Bengal defender stretched across the image, John Taylor about to grasp the football, and the striped referee with arms to the sky (a seemingly premature call). A printer’s proof (14/15), this serigraph (actual image at 20 ? x 38”) hovers in its glass and battered wood frame (49 x 31 ?”). Signed at bottom right by Neiman in pencil.
