Major League Baseball Signed Contract Collection (66)

Major League Baseball Signed Contract Collection (66)

A lifetime in baseball, all on display in the form of paper and ink. That's what you get with this Red Schoendienst contract collection as the slick-fielding, Hall of Fame second baseman spent over half a century as a player, manager and coach, primarily with the St. Louis Cardinals. Nearly every one of these legal pacts was signed by Red, most using his legal first name of Albert. It all commences in 1942 at $75 per month playing for the Union City minor league club. Then it's off to the Rochester Red Wings in 1944, then to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he won his first World Championship in 1946. Next up, the fabulous 1950s in St. Louis and onto New York with the Giants in 1956=57. His years with the Milwaukee Braves are missing here, but his return to the Cards in 1960 is documented. In 1962, Schoendienst began coaching as well as playing so there are two contracts - one for player, one for coach. Then onto coaching the 1964 World Championship team, and managing the 1967 World Champions. There are also agreements reflecting his two-year coaching stint with the A's in late 1970s, as well as yet another return to the Cardinals in 1979. From there until present, Red has been with the franchise as a coach and special adviser, helping to guide them to more titles. There is a gap between 1998 and 2007, but aside from that and the few Braves years in the late '50s, this is a near-complete run of Red's contracts. Please note that the social security numbers have either been blacked out or have a sticker over them. The collection also includes correspondence between Red and the teams in question, as players back in his heyday actually negotiated their own contracts. Releases, supplemental contracts and paperwork are also included, with some duplication due to contract renegotiation. The average condition is EX, with typical mailing folds.
