Sam Jethroe 1950 Outstanding Rookie Award
Three years after Jackie Robinson shattered baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers, speedy Negro League outfielder Sam Jethroe became the first black player for the Boston Braves. This shield-shaped plaque with silver plate was presented to "The Jet" after his initial campaign in Beantown and it reads: "OUTSTANDING 1950 ROOKIE AWARD PRESENTED TO SAM JETHROE BOSTON BRAVES BY BOSTON BASEBALL WRITERS' ASSOCIATION FEBRUARY 1, 1951." Jethroe also won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1950, the oldest player ever to earn that distinction at age 32. The plaque itself shows some separation at its seems the front plate is intact and in EX-MT condition. The reverse has a small label that reads: Trophy by Wallace Silversmiths. One of the Negro League greats, Jethroe is a true cult legend.
