Thomas Jefferson and James Madison Signed Document.

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison Signed Document.

In June 1804, President Thomas Jefferson signed this document, granting permission for a schooner carrying livestock and provision to sail from New London to Barbados. Also notable is the signature of Secretary of State and future President James Madison, and the left edge is embossed with an absolutely superb 3" U.S. Seal, featuring an eagle, wings displayed, with banner and shield. In addition to English, the document is printed in French, Spanish and German, and is matted to 19 3/4" x 15 3/4", very nicely framed under glass to 26 1/4" x 22 1/4". Vertical and horizontal creases from folding, with some tearing. A tear on the top margin appears to have been previously repaired with tape, leaving a residue mark. Overall condition is VG, and the document offers a great deal of colorful and specific history. The signatures are bold and clear.
