Two 1961 "Mercy Bowl" Signed Footballs

Two 1961 "Mercy Bowl" Signed Footballs

These are two game signed balls, with 80 to 100 autographs on each ball, from the Helms Museum. The first is from 1961 for the first Mercy Bowl and the second ball is for possibly the second Mercy Bowl, also from 1961 which is not referenced in our research. The second Bowl was supposed to be in 1971, when this second ball is from 1961. Additional research is required to determine the source of the second ball. The first Mercy Bowl was played between Fresno State and Bowling Green at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on November 23, 1961, as a special fundraiser in memory of sixteen Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo football players killed in a plane crash following a game against Bowling Green a year earlier. On the first ball, the tag reads "Mercy Bowl Team? 1985.4039 FB.Q476 1961 Fresno St. Underated" and the other tag reads "Mercy Bowl LA State vs. ?" "To raise money form the players of CS Poly S Lo killed in plane crash" 2nd?" The first ball is a "Voit XF9 Custom" and the second Rawlings reads "Mercy 1961 Bowl" The signatures are clearly legible, relatively dark overall, EX to EX+, and the condition of balls is overall EX-MT. From the collection of the esteemed Helms Hall Sports Museum and will come with letter of provenance/authenticity from Lelands.com.
