Ty Cobb 1921 "They Laugh At Father Time" Photo

Ty Cobb 1921 "They Laugh At Father Time" Photo

At age 36, Ty Cobb may have been wrestling with a bit of mid-life crisis, as well as any criticism of his dual managerial/player role on his beloved team the Detroit Tigers in 1921. None such criticism in this press junket entitled “They laugh at Father Time”, attached to the back of this classic (vg) International wire photo, a brutally typewritten, poetic manifesto praising the likes of Cobb and other older athletes such as Jim Thorpe, harness horse racer Pop Greer, and cycler Frank Kramer. Penned on 12/29/21, this humorous piece is incomplete in that, at its end, it refers us to turn “(OVER)”, yet the paper it’s written on is taped to our photo - unlikely to be seen (if its even there?) unless pried off. This photo, showing Cobb (who does look older) swinging a bat, is a bit beaten up, with several pinholes, missing upper and lower right hand corners, and a few creases. It is a testament to Cobb’s longevity, and respect to his legacy. Photo measures 6 ? x 8 ?”.
